Drug for the treatment of Heartworm disease in very short supply

The only FDA approved drug for the treatment of Canine Heartworm Disease is in very short supply.  Immiticide (Melarsomine), made by Merial, has been very hard to come by this summer ever since the company announced production issues in August.  This drug is the only approved treatment for dogs currently infected and should not be confused with drugs like Ivermectin or Milbemycin, which are monthly medications used for the prevention of infection.  Merial has not said when Immiticide will be widely available again.  As always, and especially now, the best practice is to prevent infection in the first place by keeping all dogs on a heartworm preventative medication, every month, year round!
